The Anchorman Brand

The release of the “Anchorman” sequel is today, so thankfully, the wait is over! Instead of your typical movie marketing and branding tactics to build the hype, Paramount Pictures went in a different direction to promote the film: social media.

Fans have kept the first “Anchorman” movie alive since 2004 by creating their own animated GIFs using classic quotes from the film and through clever ad designs. The buzz on social media for “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” had to make even more of a presence than ever before. With the help of the film’s stars Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, over 50 short videos and voice recordings were made to be shared across all social media networks. Paramount again encouraged “Anchorman” fans to create their own GIFs and other content on social media, and in turn, the fans ended up doing the marketing for them.

This new wave of fan-generated material in Hollywood has turned into a branding vehicle that will most likely spread into other industries as well. What do you think about giving your followers some creative control in the way your brand is marketed?
